Saturday 10th June 2017 - 1pm Start Get it in your diaries now!!
Despite the torrid conditions in 2016 we will be back in 2017!!
A huge thankyou to all of our marshalls who stuck it out in the pouring rain to allow the event to go ahead and a massive thankyou to all he runners that ploughed on through conditions too.
Entries for 2017 will open as soon as we have ironed out some details for next years race - don't worry we will keep you all posted!
A new course record was set this year at 1hr 1min so will you be the one to break the hour marker in 2017?? Only 1 way to find out get entered and get training!
The course remains the same, the entry process is the same, the venue is the same so for all those that competed last year please spread the word and for those new to the event - what you waiting for?
Why, oh why? I can hear you all screaming!
Well, many, many, many moons ago when I was just a wee lad I would always attend our local Gala in Caton. Taking part on the day with all the varied things going on from the fancy dress parade, side stand attractions and of course the sports events. One event I was never able to enter, mostly due to a lack of willingness, was the annual fell run organised for the Gala. Fast forward many years (not too many) and I am now a keen trail & fell runner, but sadly, there is now no longer a fell race held at the local Gala. So a couple of like minded runners got together and here we have it - The Windmill Race - a 10 mile mixed road & fell race to held once again from our local Gala.
When?: Caton Gala, Saturday 10th June, 2017!
Registration: Registration & number collection from Race HQ on the Gala Field from 11:30 - 12:30. After a short safety briefing at 12:50 the race will set off at 13:00 prompt.
Parking: Follow signs for Caton Gala Car Parks
Directions: From the Motorway: Exit the M6 at Junction 34 and head for Caton on the A683. Stay on this road for approximately 3 miles until you enter Caton village, at the small painted roundabout you will see the Station Hotel - the field is just behind the pub. From Kirkby Lonsdale Direction: Leave Kirkby Lonsdale following signs for Lancaster, these will then start to incorporate signs for Caton. Again, stay on this road until you enter the village, as you approach the small roundabout the Gala field is on your left.
The Race: The race will take place in around Caton-with-Littledale & Caton Moors whilst we hope for excellent weather sadly it is beyond our control so please dress appropriatley for the day as it can be very windy & cold up on the Moors. Due to the nature of the course trail shoes are recommended as some sections are soft, boggy and slippy however there is also around 3.5 miles of road running so you may want something with a little cushioning too. The course will be waymarked with fluorescent arrows and chalk markings on the road. Marshalls will also be present guiding you & supporting you - they are all volunteers so give them a smile and thankyou as you pass!
The route follows open roads, recognized footpaths and permissive paths however some of these do go through local farmers fields and whilst every effort has been made to ensure an open gate route some of these fields may still have livestock in them so please respect the route & property of the landowners. If you are carrying gels or drinks and have any litter please carry it with you or leave it with a marshall.
Presentations:Prizes for the top 3 men and women will be awarded after the race. Hopefully we will have some more goodies too for some other lucky racers!
Entry:Race entry is £10 and you can enter below in the 'How to Enter' section. Entry covers your race fee, entry for 1 adult to the Gala field for the day, race number & memento, other Gala entrants will be £4 but under 16's are free! We will also be manually timing the event with a split time at around 6 miles. We will also have an event photographer just after 7 miles so don't forget to say cheese!. All photos and results will be available as soon as possible in the days after the event.
The course is a mix of road, trail and fell, although quite where the line between trail & fell is drawn I'm not sure but there is definitely tarmac, stony paths and fields - I'd also expect some mud & puddles too!
Departing from the Gala field runners will head out through 'The Snicket' and on to Artlebeck Road before crossing the marshalled point on Brookhouse Road at 'The Blue Bridge' (which isn't actually blue anymore!). Up 'The Ginnel' onto Roman Crescent leading to a left at the junction onto Fell View, up through The Glen and another left onto Broadacre Road. Just before reaching the primary school head left into the woods, over the bridge then the stile and into the fields. Following the arrow marked paths up through the fields before heading right up hill, this is the start or the arduous up hill climbing! Contiune following the course markers (which roughly follow the rights of way markers) across more fields before turning right out of the fields and onto Littledale Rd.
Follow Littledale Road until bearing left onto Roeburndale Rd. Stay on Roeburndale Rd until reaching the refreshment station as you turn left onto the access road leading across the back of Caton Moor Windfarm. Across the back of the Windfarm and the highest point on the course (don't forget to take in the magnificent views of the Morecambe Bay area) before doubling back on yourself through the timing point, not forgetting to collect your 'King of the Hill' memento. Follow the waymarked permissive path through the fields, stiles & gates before picking up the reservoir road. Follow this path down past the reservoir and water works before turning left for a brief down and up section known locally as 'The Big Dipper'. Right onto Littledale Road before heading left into the fields you left on the way out, from here the return leg is the reverse as the way out.
If you cant follow my wild descripion DO NOT PANIC! all paths will be waymarked, key junctions & turning points will be marshalled and we will also have road markings to help you along the way.
